On 13 February, the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) will be marking European Epilepsy Day for the second time, following its successful launch in 2011, and this year’s theme is the burden of epilepsy.

There is no better opportunity to share experiences of what epilepsy means on a day-to-day basis, and it is for that reason that the day will also see an update of Epilepsy in Our Time, a video diary initiative of UCB that explores the day to day life of people living with epilepsy.

Lloyd, Monica, Jérôme, David, Julie and Marion offer us a privileged insight into their personal experiences with a short, self-filmed diary that sets out to inspire others to achieve their own personal goals.

As Marion says in the video, offering an insight into her perspective of epilepsy: “There are a lot of issues and a lot of questions on people’s minds, but having epilepsy does not make you a burden to society and on the contrary it can sometimes make you even stronger.”

We have worked since 2010 on the ‘Epilepsy In Our Time’ project, and it is our aim to continue to visit people living with epilepsy each year to see how their daily lives with epilepsy have changed and whether their hopes or ambitions have come to fruition.

And, by learning from other people’s experiences in different countries, I very much look forward to seeing Epilepsy In Our Time and the European Epilepsy Day inspiring people to work together with their health care team to seek out the best possible care.

It only remains for me to invite you to join in on 13 February for European Epilepsy Day, enjoy the Epilepsy In Our Time video diary, and to spread the word.
